The number one cause of stress is "other people". Often the
manager that is supposed to be reducing it, is causing it! This is usually
caused by being unaware, rather than any malicious intent. Did you know that
stress is now sited more frequently for self reported illnesses than backache?
More worrying, stress is now thought to be responsible for many other
illnesses.
Although not yet compulsory through legislation, organisations have a duty of
care to their employees, to ensure protection from damage caused through stress.
It also makes economic sense. Occupational Stress is a major contributor to high
staff turnover, low moral, absenteeism and low productivity. Managers who
complete this programme will realise that it takes more than just relaxation
exercises to cope with stress. We need to get to the causes of stress and deal
with those - not just try to cure the symptoms.
We are now beginning to fully understand the neuroscience behind stress. This
half day programme is ideal for organisations that want to build awareness of
stress among managers and staff. It makes a perfect vehicle for any organisation
wishing to launch an Occupational Stress Policy.
What is Stress?
This session focuses on what stress actually is and why we get it. Delegates
will learn about the physiological causes of stress, examined from the
perspective of the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience.
Causes and Indicators
We use the Health and Safety Executive's framework for the causes of
Occupational Stress. We will then look at the indicators of stress that managers
can look out for.
Management Tools
Most of the things that we can do to help reduce harmful stress in the
workplace are common sense. However, as we all know, something is only common
when we all know about it. This session provides a review of the support
available in your organisation and the skill set that managers should have. If
you need help with developing these, please look at some of our other
programmes.
