As managers and leaders we achieve our objectives through the
work of other people. Interpersonal relationships are therefore fundamental to
our ability to achieve success. Indeed the higher in an organisation we climb,
the more important becomes our skill of engaging with others. at the heart of
this skill is what is being called Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand and regulate
your own emotions, and respond to others empathetically to theirs. By regulating
our own emotions it allows us to see beyond the emotion of a situation and deal
with it in a far more cognitive fashion. By being aware of the emotions of
others, we can more easily relate to them and begin to perceive situations from
their perspective.
Much of the soft skills that managers learn are in fact aspects of Emotional
Intelligence. The Working Through People programme
provides many of the skills needed. Some soft skills training does not deliver
the benefits expected however, because delegates are not aware of their
behaviour, because they do not have an adequate frame of reference. This
programme aims to give them that frame of reference.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
A common framework for emotional intelligence is:
Self-awareness
Self-regulation
Self-motivation
Awareness of others
Interpersonal skills
This programme begins by exploring the framework and gaining an understanding
of what Emotional Intelligence is.
Developing Emotional intelligence
The remainder of the programme is designed to increase the self-awareness of
delegates. It is driven by the "Power of Opposites". In order to know
what we are, we also need to know what we are not. We therefore explore our
personalities using a number of different tools. We also use the tools to
understand how we are different to others, and how that affects our interactions
with them.
The actual material used will very much depend on the situation in your
organisation, and whether any other programmes are to be incorporated. The
personality and ability questionnaires are supplied by Psytech
and / or Inscape Publishing. Eric
Sutherland was trained by Psytech in the administration and interpretation
of personality testing. He holds the British
Psychological Society's Level B Certificate of Competence in Occupational
Testing.

"There is one thing stronger
than all of the armies of the world - that is an idea whose time has come."
Victor Hugo
People are often hired for what
or who they know, but fired because of how they behave.
Developing your Emotional
Intelligence is a highly effective way of ensuring that this does not
happen to you.
