The Hawthorn Effect

The effect discovered by Hawthorn: Discovered when hawthorn did experiments in a factory to try to determine the optimal level of hygiene factors for productivity. When conducting the experiments, the extra attention that the employees received, seemed to instil in them a greater sense of importance for themselves and their jobs. This improved their performance rate, making it difficult to determine if the environmental changes were responsible for the improvement, or just the increased attention itself.
